Electric boiler for heating a private house: types and cost calculation

Before starting construction, when drawing up a project, a diligent owner will always think about arranging a heating system for his home. The modern industry offers many options for heating residential premises: from traditional coal-fired and wood-burning stoves to exotic solar-powered systems. One of the most reasonable solutions for heating a private can be considered electric boilers.

Do you need an electric boiler, can you choose something else?

Let's think about what qualities you want to get from the heating system in your home?

  • the system should be durable (you don’t want to redo it every couple of years), but at the same time it should be easy to repair,
  • it must be strong so as not to bring it down by accidental touch,
  • heating should be easy to manage and not require complex adjustments,
  • it must be safe and non-hazardous,
  • the heating system must work uninterrupted throughout the entire heating season (and in the northern regions of our country it can be very long),
  • heating should not violate the interior solutions laid down in the design of the dwelling.

One of the most popular solutions for creating a heating system in private homes is electric heating.

The essence of electric home heating

When heating a room by means of an electric current, there will be no intermediary - a heat carrier - in the heat balance of your home. For example, in water heating systems, it is necessary to first heat the liquid coolant - water, and only then it will give off heat to the entire volume of the room. In the case of electric heating, the heat generated by the operation of the electric heating elements will be transferred directly to your home.

Many homeowners are repelled by prejudices about the supposedly high cost and unreliability of such systems from choosing an electric home heating system. However, modern electric boilers are already devoid of the shortcomings inherent in their "grandfathers" and show excellent efficiency and a solid period of trouble-free operation.

Common types of electric boilers for a private house, which one is better?

The most common and familiar type of electric boiler for a private house is a boiler on a heating element, that is, a tank with heat-carrying water that has an electric heating coil inside.

At the initial stage of operation of such boilers, they show an efficiency of up to 80 percent. But then, after the formation of scale on the heating element, their efficiency begins to decline. So, just a couple of millimeters of scale can reduce the efficiency of such a boiler by up to 80 percent. After that, their owners already have to pay money for wasted electricity.

Modern modifications of such boilers are equipped with "cunning" automation, which significantly slows down the process of scale formation.

As a positive point, one can note the rather low price of this type of electric boilers and the ease of installation.

Electrode boilers

The most optimal choice according to the "price-quality" criterion when choosing a heating system will be an electrode boiler. Their design uses the natural electrical conductivity of water, and the heating electrodes are separated from each other by a certain distance.

The electrode boiler heats water many times faster than conventional heating elements, in addition, it consumes much less electricity.

But such an electric boiler requires careful and competent installation. It needs to be properly grounded. In addition, once a year, the electrodes in such boilers still have to be descaled. But all this is covered by the highest efficiency - the boiler on the electrodes converts up to 96 percent of the electrical energy entering it into heat.

Induction electric boilers

Recently, the positions of electrode boilers have been successfully crowded out by induction heating electric boilers. The principle of their operation is identical to that used in induction electric stoves.

The induction coils used to heat water in such systems are practically safe and show fantastic efficiency - they convert 99 percent of the electricity entering it into heat. Good manufacturers of these types of boilers can give a guarantee of up to thirty years. You may be put off by the rather high price of induction boilers, but remember that in the end you pay not only for the equipment, but also for its life, as well as for the energy that it will consume in the future.

Combined heating system of a residential building based on an electric boiler

Often, electric heating systems in private homes are installed in parallel with other devices. In this case, they can be used in turn. A classic example is an electric heating system and a wood-burning fireplace. In this case, when lighting a fireplace, you can always turn off the heating circuit of one of the rooms so as not to overheat it. In addition, electric heating systems can work autonomously, maintaining the set temperature in the absence of the owners, and after they return home, they can light a fireplace or start a coal-fired stove.

In addition, combined heating can be a good choice if your area has different tariffs for night and day electricity consumption.

You can combine any heating systems. if there is a gas pipeline near your house, then naturally it will be easier to take advantage of the benefits of gas heating. If there is cheap hard coal in the region, then perhaps part of the system can run on it. In the absence of other alternatives, you will have to resort to the classic solution - to combine wood-burning stove heating with an electric boiler.

Connecting electric boilers in a private house

The process of connecting electric boilers for a private house is, in principle, simple. You just need to carefully follow the instructions that came with the equipment. So, electric boilers can have a different device and various combinations of additional equipment.Their own nuances are required when installing the upper wiring or forced circulation system, a system of warm electric floors or a closed coolant circuit. In any case, when drawing up a project for heating a private house using an electric boiler, you need to make a preliminary calculation and plan not only the purchase of equipment and additional devices, but also the process of its installation.
